It is to be noted that Ethan Frome for which many remember her best (although she did not recognize it as her finest story) has been omitted here. The introduction by the editor is literary rather than personal, follows the progression of her works, underlines her skill as a social satirist, her ""unflagging invention, her remarkable character drawing and her unswerving reality of situation"" while the influence of Henry James is underplayed. At any rate, with the Jamesian revival, it is more than likely that this will capture critical attention as well as that of those who wish to return to that highly civilized world of genteel realism.
