The dynamic '50's produced its own kind of pungent, quite heroic social criticism. In its place, as though the remedial evils of then have become the immutable absurdities of now, there is flourishing a new school of social satire and political allegory. Mr. Hoppe's contributions are among the best. His prime concerns, inevitably: the Yoo Hoos of the Right Wing extremes (""With Patriots Like Us, Who Needs Traitors?""), the American Medical Association gone lobbyist (""Is It Fatal, Doc?""), intolerance among the religious (""Has the Atheist Got a Prayer?) and, that old standby, deceptive packaging (""Life Is So Simple -- On Madison Avenue""). To the super-patriotic ladies with Christ on their tongue, prints on their back, and hate in their heart, Hoppe is nothing short of devastating. He proposes a new Love Everybody* Crusade excepting Antarcticans, notably Penguins, who are best known for the fact that they smoke mentholated cigarettes, spout from their nefarious bible ""Das Human Beings, and invidiously corrupt our children and our PTA's. Beware the Pen-Symps, too! Stimulating, provocative, frequently brilliant humour.
