In 1948, when the Rt. Rev. Arthur Lichtenberger, now Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, was dean of Trinity Cathedral, he prepared for publication by the Church Congress in the United States a series of readings for each day of Lent which illustrate the primary purpose of Lent, to afford a way of renewal through penitence, abstinence, moral effort, social responsibility, the Eucharist, and finally the cross and passion of Christ. These passages are selected from a wide range of Christian thought, from St. Athanasius to W. H. Auden. Some are familiar, -- many more are not, but all are admirably suited to the purpose of their choice, -- to help the Christian renew his life at all levels. It is good to have this devotional book made available for wider use. There is nothing better for daily Lenten reading available.
