THE MAC ARTHUR CONTROVERSY

The remainder of the title of this timely reissue, somewhat revised from 1951, is "And the Future of American Foreign Policy." The retelling of the career of our most famous—or, if you will, infamous, according to these two veteran liberal Washingtonians—General of the Armies is highlighted by every mistake the man with the braid ever made. And he may not yet have failed in his most ill-conceived mission. This was his attempt to make American foreign policy and send our Korean forces hell-for-atoms across the Yalu into China. The future described in the title is our present. As our government veers toward a policy of declaring China inbounds for bombing, the ghost of the "old soldier" flickers back to life and the controversy resulting from MacArthur's challenge to President Truman has never had more significance. The last section is a brief history of our questionable China policy, in which many myths are destroyed, many bothersome questions answered. This is another one of those volumes one hopes the officials described therein are reading and studying. The public should do no less.
