ARTHUR MILLER'S COLLECTED PLAYS

In the introduction Mr. Miller presents his theories of art and drama. A play, he says is a dynamic communication between audience and dramatist, which presuposes a mutual frame of reference- ""something in the air"" collectively sensed. The role of the playwright, therefore, is to detect this ""something"", collapse it temporally and refine it artistically. A play should be understood at all levels and should express a universal of human behavior or emotion. The conception and execution of All My Sons, Death of a Salesman, The Crucible, A Memory of Two Mondays, and A View from the Bridge is outlined in the introduction and illustrates how the theory may be applied (and with optimal results, we say!). A View from the Bridge appears in the collection in its final form for the first time.
