In this volume the Garvin lectures which have been delivered annually for the past nine years have been brought together. These lectures are made possible by an endowment set up by the late M. T. Garvin to make possible a lecture each year by a recognized scholar on the subjects: ""The Idea of God as Affected by Modern Knowledge"" and ""The Immortality of Man"" to be delivered at the Unitarian Church of Our Father at Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The series of lectures is remarkable because of the unusually high quality of scholarship represented in the lecturers and because of the brilliance of their expositions. When scholars such as Arthur Compton, Jacques Maritain, Maude Royden, Hornell Hart, Reinhold Niebuhr, William Ernest Hocking, Charles E. Park, Willard L. Sperry, and F. S. C. Northrup lecture on our idea of God and immortality they should command the attention of a large and respectful audience. The publication of these lectures should be welcomed by all thoughtful Christians and others interested in the ultimate meaning of life.
