THE UNITED STATES AND SOUTH AMERICA: The Northern Republics

By

Publisher: Harvard University Press

A somewhat professional approach to the northern republics, the ""bolivarian republics"" as he calls them,- Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, which is both general and specific in coverage. The first section deals with the geography, physical properties, peoples; he shows how Bolivia is dominated by tin, Venezuela by oil; how Peru is a country of two distinct cultures, Ecuador, a two city breakdown, Colombia, a country of city states. The second section, which is a history of wartime development, political and economic, is the most interesting- and gives this book its importance, in contrast to others in the field. In general, the viewpoint throughout defends the Good Neighbor policy, the value of North American contribution, and presents the countries from the political and economic aspects primarily.
