Volume three of an historical and sociological survey of Greene County, Georgia. The first part of the book gives the history of the county, from Indian times through settlement by whites, slavery and plantation economy, Civil War, Reconstruction, share cropping, slumps and booms, the depression and the collapse of the cotton economy. In 1939 the Unified Farm Program was inaugurated, and the second half of the book traces the results:- increase of soil-building crops, introduction of new agricultural techniques, forestration of eroded lands, importation of equipment and livestock, schools, clinics, housing projects -- a remaking of a whole agricultural district. The cost is not yet counted; the results justify it. A book which traces a tremendous experiment -- for sociological records.
