A simply written story of the love of a man for a ship. Brouwer, raised in poverty and ugliness, falls in love with the Johanna Maria on her first voyage and stays with her, as sail maker, through fat times and lean, good masters and bad, fame and disgrace. He loses her only to find her again, and finally possesses her for his own, to die aboard her. The ship is the heroine -- cunning, masterful, and always showing her best side to Brouwer. Add this to the sailing vessel gallery, along with The Sea Witch and others. Excellent reading, for all your sea story readers, and others who like a good tale. A beautiful translation of a Dutch classic (by Brian W. Downs).
