THE WILL OF THE TRIBE by Arthur W. Upfield

THE WILL OF THE TRIBE

A body is found in the middle of a crater in the Northern Australian bush country and Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte, Upfield's biracial savant, is called in to find out how the body got there, who did the killing, and why. In the investigation, Inspector Bonaparte utilizes his knowledge of black and white psychology to deal with a cantankerous aboriginal medicine man and the European Kimberley farmers. The author's last scene, in which a native maiden sheds all the trappings of civilization, is tremendously exciting. But, in general, Arthur Upfield's style is as rugged and rough-hewn as the bush country's terrain.
