A YEAR OF BEASTS

In a companion to A Year of Birds, a farm family observes animals during the year. The family's two children are also found at a different activity each month--making a snowman when they spy deer in January, collecting maple sap as a woodchuck emerges from hibernation in March, picnicking with chipmunks in July, etc. Wolff's hand-tinted linoleum blocks are highly evocative, the bold black a foil for the brilliantly luminous colors. The details of each double-page spread contribute to the harmonious design of the whole. A lovely picture book, and Wolff's best to date.
