Shawn tells readers about his grandfather, who often seems lost in the past, in a gently rhythmic text. The glowing illustrations defy categorization: Apartment buildings and red- roofed houses fill up a cityscape of flattened perspectives and rounded shapes, while people and objects the grandfather recalls float on the page—weightless memories in surreal compositions. Clocks are everywhere, swimming across the illustrations like bubbles, or prominently framed, or both. All of these imaginative scenes point in unpredictable ways to a world whose characteristics are as evocative as they are difficult to name. The pictures interact remarkably with the text: The grandson's expressions—kind and questioning—enrich his narrational voice. A sweetly philosophical look at time, memory, and the connection between old and young. (Picture book. 4-9)
