A first rate novel set during the Napoleonic war between France and England. Elizabeth manages to escape her young guardian Pierre whom she believes to be a traitor to England. Her boyish disguise gets her accidentally pressed into naval service aboard ship, and her indignation leads the captain to make more suitable use of her talents. As a spy in Napoleon's household, Elizabeth is shocked to discover Pierre's courageous espionage work for England. A dramatic escape brings hero and heroine back to England and a final happy union as man and wife. All the ingredients of romance, suspense, intrigue and historic atmosphere are present in this captivating story.
