This addition to the Rivers of America would not seem to me to have as universal appeal as the books about better known rivers. And yet Derleth, who knows and loves his subject, has shared intimate details of the country, the wild life, the folk lore and sectional history, and -- in a final description of the river and its people, has written what is virtually a plea for recognition of its beauty and its importance. He has chosen to deal with the subject, not in historical sequence, but as different phases of life, present and past, in the land through which his river flows. He describes its discovery, the early Jesult and French trader settlers, the Indian tribes, the agricultural developments, the tourist trade, personalities and arts. Local value.
