Their acquaintance swings around the warnings Swift Otter brings of Sioux raids, knowledge of mature and each other's customs from mutual experiences, help in the crucial fights that win the settlers their homes. And the incidental activities of Zachary Taylor and Black Hawk, the friendly Sac chief, add historical color.
