SWEET GENEVIEVE

A romance of 30 odd years ago, set in his customary Sac Prairie, and handled with his usual competence, but no more than simply that. This is the story of Jenny and David, boy and girl sweethearts, but riding the rocks of Jenny's hatred of Sac Prairie and her determination to get away. A showboat gives her chance with the part of the leading lady, while David stays at home with a widowed mother. Jenny plays her parts, adequately but with no spark of genius; she marries the leading man, a weakling, who dies after a few years of anything but wedded bliss, and Jenny returns, with her child, to Sac Prairie and David. Not of great consequence -- simply another panel in the portrait.
