KIRKUS REVIEW

Although this book appears under the imprint of the Sequana Collection, an organization which corresponds to the American Book-of-the-Month-Club, it is doubtful whether this history of the Byzantine empire will have a very general appeal. The author has done a masterly piece of assimilation and condensation, limiting himself to the most significant events and phases of a cultural and historical evolution which spans ten centuries. Customs, religious rites and rifts, artistic enterprises, the inroads of foreign civilizations and armies, and primarily the reign of each emperor and their individual contributions to national unity. A piece of work as colossal as the epoch it reflects, it is nonetheless more for the student than for the average reader.
