A good, representative collection of Russian poetry, with an introduction by the editor which gives the reader both history and orientation. Here are the beginnings of Russian poetry in the early 19th century; then Pushkin and his contemporaries, Tyutchev, Lermontov, Nekrasov and others- lyrical poets, some of them civic-minded realists, others aloof aesthetes; the symbolists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, mystical, transcendental ; the school termed acmeism which followed in reaction to symbolism; the futurist poets, etc. etc. There is evidence of the changes brought about by the revolution as some of the poets emigrated, others remained silent, and still others were enthusiastic in their support- notably the futurists. The Soviet poets are also represented with their poetry which is for the most part, made-to-order, propaganda, patriotic or occasional... Specialized.
