FAIR HAVENS by B. C. Jefferson

FAIR HAVENS

Pub Date: Oct. 5th, 1948

Introduced in a foreword by the author as a ""leisurely story"", the understatement here is considerable. Backgrounded by the end of the horse and buggy era, when the railroad and the automobile are beginning to show their strength, set in the eastern part of Texas before the discovery of oil, this tells of obdurate Thad Harmon, a newcomer to Fair Havens. Thad works hard, never drinks, doesn't kiss women, becomes an excellent business man with much land, and finally marries Alicia, one of the women he doesn't kiss. Thad is a shy, blushing red-headed lad whose conversation, when he talks, is limited to remarks on the weather or the crops. He keeps mostly to himself, but is respected by the townsfolk, if hardly attractive to the reader... Sluggish, amateurish.
