CHESTNUT CUB

Although not as strong as the author's Coyote, Come Home (1963, p.119, J-53), the story of the orphaned cub is smoothly executed and satisfying. The world of the bear dominates, but this realm gradually overlaps the quiet domain of an old Indian. The wilds of North Carolina's Great Smokies is a powerful background against which the association of man and beast is played out. The quiet romance of the Indian and a long ago acquaintance is finely woven in, and does not mar the mood of serenity.
