KIRKUS REVIEW

Through letters, documents, and diaries, annotated and amplified by the author, the semi-tragic life and fate of the Empress Marie of Russia, wife of Alexander II, and that of her brother, Prince Alexander of Hesse, is reconstructed. The period spans the years 1848 to 1888, a relatively quiet one, and this compilation is valuable as a picture of the life in the reigning courts at the close of the century. There is little that is intimate, little that is sharply striking, but it is a convincing, and occasionally moving view of a dying aristocracy.
