KIRKUS REVIEW

A natural, idyllic, and somewhat dated novel of the regeneration of a worldly, sophisticated writer. During a vacation spent in the Weser mountains, he first comes to fully appreciate nature -- and before long, after hours of communion with nature and simple people, in particular a young peasant girl with whom he falls in love, he realizes that the simple things in life are not only free -- but also best. A repeat on Rousseau and his Nouvelle Heloise, obviously stimulated by the new Fascist back-to-the-soil programme.
