This is the story of Julie Forrest, who at sixteen, elopes with her 28-year old English professor who had decided to attend to her upbringing himself. Together they attempt to launch a theatre in Seattle, and lose the fight against the cultural lag of the Chamber of Commerce. Then they go abroad on a Foundation grant, and in their contacts with the artists, Julie gets a sentimental education and glamorous notions about life away from Seattle. Then the coming of a baby brings her back to acceptance of settling down to home life with Don.
