The story of a son of a mill hand -- and of the tug of war between the call of the mill and duty in depression years against ambition and success, at a price in the world of music. For a time one wins, then the other -- but always there is the pull back. And the price is a bitter one, -- loss of caste with fellow workers in the mill because of friendship with the governing families; loss of a chance with the girl he loves -- or so he thinks; loss of his mother, a victim of poverty and overwork. Then the chance for redemption, and another sacrifice. But he pays -- and wins. It is a good enough story, made second rate by the flimsiness of characterization.
