A retelling of a tale from the Bakongo people of Zaire in which Nzambi Mpungu is the female creator. When she gets to Crab, he is so proud of his many legs that he spends the night boasting about the fine head he will receive the next day, but his overweening self-importance causes Nzambi to leave him headless. Like Valery Carrick's animal tales, this is brief and pungently told. The decorative black-and-white illustrations are vigorous and bold; though they contain some clumsy passages, there are others where the African motifs are used with grace and finesse.
