An eclectic assemblage in the Victorian spirit: tales and rhymes of hullaballoos--which are uproars, ""fuss and pother""--between grownups and children or children and children. Severe (and scary) in punishing wrongdoing, playfully randy when rewarding right, some are wicked (""The Terrors of the Rod""), some are whimsical (Lewis Carroll on pepper), some are magical (three Andrew Langs and a Hans Christian Andersen), others nostalgic (an early Peter Pan from J. M. Barrie); and among many less celebrated poems, jocular ones by Kipling and Browning and Lear. Several will please older fancies like the two marvels by H. H. Munro, but a few may disturb tender young sensibilities in expanding on the perils of immorality (i.e., disobedience). Fritz Wegner's sketches are stylized cartoons devilishly in keeping with the dated sense and nonsense--and it's all best consumed as family fare for those with a taste for curios.
