THE COBBLER'S REWARD

A young cobbler's kindness to ants, bees, and ducks is returned when a witch sets him three humanly impossible tasks and the creatures help him to accomplish them--thereby winning the beautiful maiden instead of losing his head. The familiar folk-tale motifs are given a Polish setting here, which Mikolaycak carries through in his decorative borders. But his mannered, gray-toned illustrations, adorned with the usual wavy locks and drapery folds (though he's cut back a bit on the billowing swirls), burden the ordinary story with an inappropriately somber, self-important look.
