The great confederacy of Indian nations in the Northeast has bad a vivid, bloody history, well exhibited in this entry in the ""Indians of North America"" series. Beginning with legends of the tribe's origins, Graymount follows its history to the present, giving insight into the pride and sense of community that have shaped the Iroquois' fierce reputation. A very useful, well-illustrated survey of Iroquois history, myth, ritual, and of the people themselves; the hard-to-find information on 20th-century struggles is especially valuable. Eight pages in color of masks are a welcome inclusion. Glossary, bibliography, index.
