ALEXANDER'S ANIMALS

The porcupine which Alexander found in the back yard could not sleep in Alexander's top bureau drawer, his mother said, because it would get his clean handkerchiefs dirty. So the porcupine hid up in a tree and was Alexander's playmate when Mother was busy. The penguin who came to the back door was also given a cool reception by Mother -- so he hid in the bird bath when Mother came out into the yard. A crocodile, an elephant and a giraffe found hiding places behind the garage, behind a tree and in a flower bed. But one day Mother gave Alexander a real puppy and the pretend back yard animals were neglected. So they went away. Somebody else, somewhere, is surely looking for a porcupine, a penguin, a crocodile, a giraffe and an elephant. The pictures are mild dreamy line images superimposed on board flat pastel color areas. Innocuous.
