WASTE AND RECYCLING

In the ""Conserving Our World"" series, a British import with an international point of view. After comparing nature's recycling with pollution caused by man-made waste, James describes major kinds of waste (domestic, industrial, agricultural, radioactive) and concludes with some possible remedies--including suggestions for young people. Large-scale solutions are not detailed; there's more emphasis here on environmental groups like Greenpeace and individual efforts like conservation and recycling. Nuclear power is described as no more risky than other energy sources (e.g., coil). Several excellent diagrams are also here (""one Person's Waste Each Year""); and the color photos are of good quality, especially interesting because of their many sources (for instance, a shot of polar bears on a garbage-strewn beach in Manitoba).
