NEW PATCHES FOR OLD

Though folklorists Walker and Uysal discovered this version in southwest Turkey, Hasan's sartorial mixup would be possible (and predictable) anywhere: after his wife, mother and married daughter successively refuse to shorten his new trousers, Hasan alters them himself only to discover later that all three have done the same in an effort to surprise him. The story is just about as unsubstantial as Hasan's knicker length pants are by the time everyone is finished being ""helpful,"" but Berson's muted colors and flowing lines create a gently dreamlike Turkey and the intimate warmth of an unpretentious family joke.
