Steve and Joan, from Japan to Hawaii on the , the boat he had designed and built. Takada San, enigmatic and inscrutable, annoys the family. When Mr. Andrews turned back to rescue a kitten overboard, Takada felt his advice had been ignored:- he had lost face. So for the rest of the voyage he was relatively useless. But in an emergency on Hawaii, he proves his loyalty. Character development and crises are artfully interwoven to provide interest throughout the story as it eddies in and out of dangers.
