A poignant and tensely told story of a Polish woman's courageous and harrowing odyssey across Europe with her six year old child, after the fall of Warsaw. From security and wealth, circumstances force a rapid transition as she escapes into the Ukraine, out of the Nazi frying pan into the Russian fire. Cold, hunger, illness -- her husband in a concentration camp -- her child suffering with asthma -- she determines to escape over the mountains. A guide, tribed with American dollars, becomes panic stricken and abandons them in the snow of a mountain forest. She goes on without him -- crosses the border into Hungary, is ordered back by the Gestapo. Escape again -- hounded through Yugoslavia, Italy, Spain, she finally crosses to Brazi and freedom. Absorbing.
