THE FRENCHWOMAN

Juliette, La Francaise, whose recently deceased père was disillusioned with the horrible Napoleon, is shipped to Angleterre to wed Gregory, younger brother of Blake, master of West Thorpeby Hall. Both the Hall and Gregory have nasty matters in the upper story. Gregory is not only crudely and openly lustful but, it turns out, has been running little errands for the forces of Napoleon. As for the Hall--it's worth your life what with an Octagonal Room of grisly murals, a clock that never leaves midnight, and a ghost which splashes dankly around trailing wet weeds. And Blake's crippled ward, among others, seems to want Juliette out of the way. But Juliette evades the Hall's wandering murderer, and she and Blake wed as ""cheers went up on all sides."" Another feckless contribution to that lucrative list in which peignoirs float instead of lift.
