KIRKUS REVIEW

The year is 1870 when Roselle, only seventeen--apparently an unlucky number--inherits a fiercely overdecorated chateau in the Loire filled with resentful relatives. All except Sebastien whom she loves, who might love her were he not committed to one of those exigent marriages. Roselle decides to stay on for a time in the tower room where there's a legend fatally confirmed by a current actuality and you'd better avoid that seventeenth step before you aspirate your last helas. Dreadfully dreadful from start to the finish you may never reach.
