Mrs. Schultz' house has several storeys for sure: at whose hands did Captain Gerard die there after a quarrel with the doctor; what of his daughter Lettie's romance, foreshortened by her heart attack; and where and why did his son disappear? All of this takes place on an island where Erika is summer-visiting with her aunt, and she eagerly pursues the unsolved mysteries with her friend Tom on behalf of a doctor with an incomplete case history. . . . An agreeable (if indeterminate) New England setting and pleasantly enough written to lull and gull younger girls in spite of the multiplex plot.
