A BEACON HILL CHRISTMAS

This hasn't much to offer kids who know about Filene's basement or art museum parties and even less for those who don't. It's all about some dizzy lady named Maud (who disports herself in red-and-white-striped stockings and bloomers) and how she gets ready for Christmas--buying a tree, mailing packages, throwing a party, rush rush rush--pointlessly, plotlessly. Westman's similarly agitated pictures give you lots of signs, lists, book titles, and balloon conversations to read, but (unlike Kellogg's, for example) these are humorlessly straight. The double-page scenes of row houses, skating in the park, etc., peg this as a local bookstore item for pseudo-smart adults.
