SON-RISE

No Noah (Josh Greenfeld's specially affecting story of his special child), this account by Barry Kaufman traces the home-devised system they applied to their autistic son, Raun Kahlil, and how for a thirty-week period (charted here with fidelity) they brought him out of his own withdrawn world of staring, rocking and spinning into some contact with them and others. It was a labor of love and patience, but also, long observation, imitation and stimulation as they tried to understand the boy and managed to make him understand them. The ""sun rise"" was his first self-motivated act which led to others. Tree, as we have learned from several other similar books, parents often manage more than professionals (Delecato and Doman)--this is the simplest record of their achievement without any extension (either of specific programming or personal involvement, save that of the family) to draw an audience.
