A HANDBOOK OF JAZZ

By

Pub Date: Oct. 1st, 1957
Publisher: Viking

A companion piece to his earlier (1952) History of Jazz in America adds some collateral information on its developments, its schools and styles, its elements, its instruments, its idiom (a glossary here), and its importance. For those who would learn about what they are listening to- there's a good deal about the performers- past and present- not the least of which is a long - with appraisals- of jazz artists. The recommended 5 and 15 inch shelves of jazz records helps to start the collector on his way. Ulanov, the columnist for Downbeat in both an enthusiast and an authority.
