KIRKUS REVIEW

A reissue, edited and introduced by Robert Glass Cleland, of the N.Y. Tribune's correspondents's graphic reports, first published in book form in 1850, of his trip to California, via the Isthmus, and on the return trip, a long travel period through Mexico. In professionally smooth, period elegance, he gives his first impressions of all that was new to him, keeps his eyes on not only the camps and mines, but the climate, society, politics, history, personalities, gambling, old and new customs, etc., etc., and has his fill of adventuring and experiences. Filled with incident and the findings of an alert mind, this reads as well today as contemporary travel books. Good Americana.
