Misery loves company; laughter is contagious; moderation is best... In a simple cumulative sequence, a succession of companions joins a little girl who is crying and doesn't know why, until: ""Everybody is crying--the little girl, the little boy, the rooster, the pig, the goat, the cat, the dog, the donkey."" Their tears make a river, which takes them to an island where a little boy is laughing and--guess what? After everyone has rolled on the ground with laughter, they walk home ""just smiling and looking happy."" Nonny Hogrogian's crisp, understated illustrations, sparingly touched with orange and yellow, cannot compensate for an unresolved experience. To the trio of maxims might be added ""Le cocur a ses raisons...""--but the absence of reasons here discourages involvement and extends into ridiculousness.
