CHARLESTON MURDERS

The poorest in a series of general excellence, these seven cases from Charleston's criminal record hold little interest and certainly no enigma; they are authored by the city's newspaper men and women, of no particular literary prominence. The opening accounts of the 18th century murder by a footpad, of the legendary Lavinia Fisher, who for all her loveliness ended on the gallows, and the killing of popular Captain Dawson, offer a certain period interest and treatment. The later cases, the killing of Frankie Hogan by a moonshiner, the army post murder, which involved an Annapolis man as against a country boy, Eugene Pop's shooting of his mistress, and a Negro's murder of a detective provide little criminal or conjectural value.
