At the core of this story of twelve-year-old Seth, a Connecticut school boy, is the larger and arresting drama of the underground slave railway. Son of an abolitionist, Seth, himself, becomes a conductor, and more than once saves runaway Negroes from the ultimate degredation of being returned to bondage, having known freedom. The working of the railroad, the personalities, white and Negro, who ran it, and the general spirit of those tense times, are discreetly woven into this simple but sympathetic adventure story.
