A tale of the early 20th century Indians of Montana centers on a young girl's desire to see her Grandfather, Chief from Wing, restored to active leadership of the tribe. Bracelet's secret plan was to purchase a magnificent horse for the old man and thereby gain for him respect and admiration. En route from the railroad siding with their load of precious bones for sale, grandfather and Bracelet run into horse trouble, rival Indian trouble and general frustration. Bracelet's ingenious plan protects the treasure from thieving Indians and the tribe from further harm. Her own faith in the tribe is rekindled when the men present Grandfather with a new and beautiful horse. Albert Micale's sensitive drawings of fairly modern Indians who live by historic codes are a great asset to the book.
