KIRKUS REVIEW

Jonathan, dressed in a sailor suit and firmly clutching a bag of jelly beans, is taking his first train trip alone. While riding the Victorian train he overhears talk about a bank robbery, and when he notices black masks in a box belonging to the couple facing him he is convinced that he has discovered the culprits. The train tops temporarily for repairs, and the couple whisks Jonathan away to a sinister-looking Gothic hotel. In an unsuccessful getaway, he finds out that the suspects are actually quite respectable traveling magicians. The story and the black, brown and white Victorian-style ink drawings present an amusing version of a Western melodrama.
