Doe Raccoon's yarn about the time the animals finally helped to get levees at Catfish Bend is Br'er Rabbit flavoured and a gentle slap at slow thinkers and government inefficiency. Marooned on an island during a flood, Doc and his friends, a snake, a fox and a rabbit and a frog, deliberate the pros and cons of cooperative living, plan and effect a trip down the Mississippi along with the irate, flooded-out farmers, scheme the Mayor of New Orleans into realizing the necessity for quick action up at Catfish Bend. Common sense, animal versus people-sense versus stupidity humor is here, corroborated in its down to earth quality by Alice Caddy's simple pencil characterizations of the animals. Children will love the hard headed Doc, the snake Judge Black's gallantry, the rabbit's endearing foolishness.
