Wherever possible, the author supplies the history behind the water routes, the design of barges and boats, and the methods of river navigation. Almost every page has a black and white photograph. Both text and pictures describe the crews, the freight and the special techniques demanded by the very heavy cargoes that go by water. The author formerly edited the trade magazines Rivers and Harbors and Water Transport Economics. In addition to his grip on the facts, he has the ability to present them with vitality.
