DEMOCRATIC EDUCATION by Benjamin Fine

DEMOCRATIC EDUCATION

A Education Editor for the New York Times, Mr. Fine risks with this book another storm of discussion similar to that which followed his Pulitzer Prize winning survey on the inadequacies of teaching American history in colleges of the U.S. The survey reported in Democratic Education covered a wide range of colleges with a view to meeting the needs of returned veterans who plan to take advantage of the chance to resume their education. Highly critical of his findings, Mr. Fine brings into focus the shortcomings of the classic, ""aristocratic"" education of the traditional college, the need for education on a broader, more social base, with greater emphasis on social studies, economies, psychology, history, technology. Cogent arguments, forcefully presented.
