THE STORY OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN THE U.S.A.

By

Publisher: Westminster

This book presents a brief outline and description of the establishment and growth of the Presbyterian Church in this country. It began when the Reverend Francis Makemie called together a number of other Presbyterian ministers at Philadelphia in March, 1706, to form the first American presbytery. It continues to flourish, though not without the trials and tribulations of the historical, intellectual and spiritual upheavals of the years that have passed, and it has become one of the great Protestant denominations of the U. S., choosing for the most part the moderate, evangelical middle ground between the extremes of conservatism and radicalism. Aware of past differences that have divided the church in various periods of its history, presbyterians of today are aware that their greatest strength lies not in disagreement but in unity, seeking however imperfectly to do God's will. This handbook will be of greatest use and interest to Presbyterians who wish to read a fresh and concise presentation of the history of their own church.
