There have been a number of books surveying the history of the C I O but in no other instance has the material been presented with such vigor -- nor have others had the fearless brilliance, the dynamic manner, the powerful idiom of Stolberg. Two thirds of the text deals with the surface history, its internal and external problems, its relation with the A F of L and with Capitalism. He interprets the underlying social and economic oredor motivating the movement. He attempts to analyze the immediate struggles, the impossibility of coming to terms with the A F of L, the necessity of obliterating factional rifts, for building towards future organization. He treats the outstanding figures briefly, but pointedly, and with a critical approach. He is not always objective -- he is often didactic -- his material and his approach are controversial. But the book is stimulating and good reading.
